LE PUY CAMINO WALK
The Pilgrims’ routes to Santiago are all those routes along which historical tradition or literature have recorded the passage of pilgrims since the Middle Ages. From the 10th century to the present day, countless pilgrims have travelled from every Christian corner of Europe to the tomb of the Apostle St. James. Undoubtedly, these routes have been a place of cultural and linguistic exchange, since the pilgrims on their way crossed different places, and the cultural exchange was evident between them and the local people who even formerly housed them in their own homes.
This influence of the Camino has been reflected to a large extent in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula, but also in other locations such as the southwest of France. Here pilgrims from all over Europe have been welcomed on their way to Compostela for more than 10 centuries. It was in 951, when the Bishop of Le Puy en Velay, Godescalc, decided to go to Santiago de Compostela as an offering to the Apostle that Le Puy Camino Way was inaugurated.
LE PUY CAMINO STAGES
The entire Le Puy Camino Way (also known as Via Podensis) consists of 40 stages, but many pilgrims walk Le Puy Camino by phases. It is perfectly well-marked with red and white arrows; even better than some sections of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Besides, here you will not find the tourist overcrowding that exists today on the routes through the Iberian Peninsula.
It shares the route of the GR 65, an itinerary that crosses the southern quadrant of France and runs through rural areas of great beauty. This route brings you closer to the most authentic traditional French culture, introducing you to different regions and accents. From the mythical Auvergne of Asterix to the most mythical and rural Basque Country, Le Puy Camino to Santiago follows, among others, the course of the Lot or Célé rivers, or takes you through magical places such as the Landes, Quercy or the Gers.
From April to October, this GR 65 is regularly travelled by people from all over the world, but especially by French people who want to get to know their own terroir at first hand. For them, the best way to explore the country is on foot, in a planned way, walking during the day Le Puy Camino stages and staying overnight in traditional accommodations.
